Introduction

As the Director of the Michael W. Hall School of Mechanical Engineering and PACCAR Endowed Chair Professor, I have developed a shared vision that ensures systemic improvements and update of the undergraduate curriculum to capture the ever changing industry needs in high skilled workforce. I founded the Innovation, Design and Engineering Education laboratory, with a new paradigm that mentors students how to use the fundamental of engineering to bring a technology idea all the way to a marketable product. Within less than 3 years, my group raised more than $30MM in gifts and awards to support the vision. I have a passion to formulate long-term visions in the areas of research, teaching, and service to the student, the broader communities, and the economy.

Subject Areas Taught

  • Introduction to Materials Science & Engineering
  • Physical Metallurgy
  • Mechanical Metallurgy
  • Dislocations and Defects
  • Microstructure Formation
  • Crystallography and Twinning

Research Overview

I lead a group of researchers who are obsessed about the fundamental truth underlying metallic materials behavior in the most pressing issues of our modern time industry. Sometimes we have to design a novel microstructure with unique macroscopic properties for an industry and pressing lead times, and sometimes we go beyond the realm of engineering to take on the enjoyable journey of unlocking the fundamental understanding a phenomenon rooted in small scale mechanisms to create a new foundational science.
